Tourism, Heritage and Culture
clubs
To promote greater awareness and understanding among the student community regarding our rich culture, heritage and tourist attractions, the Department of Tourism has taken a decision to establish Tourism, Heritage and Culture clubs in different schools and colleges in the twin cities in the first instance. In this regard, a meeting was conducted with representatives of a few schools and colleges on 25/06/2011 in which a number of ideas were generated on how these clubs can be made operational.
Based on the feedback given, the Department has agreed to the following ideas:
1. The clubs will be admitting students on a voluntary basis.
2. The school / college will nominate one teacher coordinator to supervise the activities of the club. If considered necessary, a second teacher can also be nominated.
3. All the clubs will be required to mandatorily participate in common activities organized by the Department on two occasions every year, namely World Tourism Day (27th September) and World Heritage Day (18th April) . The clubs will be given total flexibility in organizing various other Tourism, Culture and Heritage related events in the school / college. These activities can include excursion to tourism places, cleanliness drive at tourist places, profiling of visitors at tourist places, sensitizing local guides and vendors at Tourism spots, organizing expert lectures, conducting quiz programmes, painting and sketching, interacting with corporate house to promote ‘adopt a monument scheme’, etc., This list is only illustrative and more items can be added as per the school / college’s choices.
4. The teacher coordinator and the member students will jointly discuss the type of activities they would like to conduct on behalf of the club. These activities can be mainly conducted outside school hours or on weekends and holidays.
5. Once an activity is selected, the teacher coordinator will work out the requirement of funds and the Department will make the funding available to the school / college. It is therefore clear that the school / college or the students will not be required to spend any money on their own to form the club and organize its activities. The Government will bear all the expenditure after proper scrutiny.
6. The Department will issue identity cards / badges / certificates to the schools / colleges, the teacher coordinator and the student members.
7. Members can also avail discounts when they visit tourist places, museums, exhibitions, etc., which are organized by the Government.
8. Folk artists and other performers and crafts persons will be sponsored by the Culture Department to visit the clubs and demonstrate their art before the members.
9. Activities of the clubs will be displayed on the Tourism Department website and the members will be encouraged to contribute articles, photographs, paintings, etc.
10. The best college and the best school running the club will also be given an award every year on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
P.T.O….
You are also welcome to offer any additional suggestion regarding the formation and operation of the club.
